Automator for Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard: Visual QuickStart Guide uses a combination of task-based instruction and strong visuals to teach intermediate Macintosh users how to automate repetitive, time-consuming tasks with the Automator application that is included with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Automator comes with many useful automated routines (called actions) preinstalled, for lots of popular applications, that do things like remove empty playlists from iTunes or add attachments to Mac Mail. The real power of Automator lies in mixing and matching these actions to have them do exactly the job you want. They're put together in a string of actions known as a workflow. Author Ben Waldie introduces readers to how Automator works, and then helps them assemble and use Automator workflows.

Both beginning users who want a thorough introduction to Automator and more advanced users looking for a convenient reference will find what they need here in straightforward language, clear steps, and practical tips.

Ben Waldie is president of Automated Workflows, LLC, a company offering AppleScript, Automator, and workflow consulting services to Mac-based businesses.
Peachpit Blog Series Announced: Using Automator

Tips for Using Automator

Phoenixville, Pennsylvania - March 2nd, 2009 - Automated Workflows, LLC is pleased to announce a series of entries on the Peachpit Press blog. The series provides general tips for using Automator, and includes the following entries:

03.02.09 - Using Automator: Recording

03.03.09 - Using Automator: Media Browser

03.04.09 - Using Automator: Conversion Actions

03.05.09 - Using Automator: Scheduling Workflows

03.06.09 - Using Automator: Print Workflows

Links to the entries can be found in the "Tips" section of the Automated Workflows, LLC's website.

Automator, developed by Apple Inc., is designed for all levels of users, from novice to expert. Automator makes performing time consuming and repetitive tasks in Mac OS X a snap! The basic unit for automation in Automator is called an action, and each action is responsible for performing a single specific task. Using Automator's interface, users can link actions together in infinite ways to form a complete workflow that matches their unique needs. Hundreds of actions are included with Automator for performing tasks in Apple applications and the operating system itself. This list can be expanded with actions made available by developers.

New Automator for Leopard Book Released

Peachpit Press Releases Ben Waldie's Automator for Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard: Visual QuickStart Guide

Phoenixville, Pennsylvania - January 1st, 2008 - Automated Workflows, LLC is pleased to announce Peachpit Press' release of Ben Waldie's Automator for Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard: Visual QuickStart Guide.

Automator for Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard: Visual QuickStart Guide uses a combination of task-based instruction and strong visuals to teach Macintosh users how to automate repetitive, time-consuming tasks with the Automator application that is included with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. Automator comes with many useful automations (called actions) preinstalled, for lots of popular applications, that do things like remove empty playlists from iTunes or add attachments to Mac Mail messages. The real power of Automator lies in mixing and matching these actions to have them do exactly the job you need them to, in a string of actions known as a workflow.

Author Ben Waldie introduces readers to how Automator works, and then helps them assemble and use Automator workflows. This book covers the major updates to Automator in Macintosh OS X 10.5 (Leopard). The updated Automator works with any Mac application thanks to a new feature called looping, and is more versatile thanks to variables. These features make Automator more flexible and powerful than ever before, and greatly increase its appeal and interest to Mac users.
Both beginning users who want a thorough introduction to Automator and more advanced users looking for a convenient reference will find what they need here in straightforward language, clear steps, and practical tips.

Ben Waldie is president of Automated Workflows, LLC, a company offering AppleScript and workflow automation consulting services to Mac-based businesses.
Macworld Conference & Expo AppleScript Session Announced

AppleScript for Digital Photographers

Phoenixville, Pennsylvania — July 6, 2005 — An "AppleScript for Digital Photographers" session will be held at Macworld Conference & Expo in Boston on Wednesday, July 13th, 2005 from 1:15 PM - 2:15 PM. This session will feature Ben Waldie, President of Automated Workflows, LLC, and will be part of the User Conference track.

With the onset of the digital camera revolution, photographers today are getting more than they bargained for. Digital photography brings with it a daunting number of digital files, all needing to be downloaded, processed, converted, renamed, keyworded, and more. Without automation, these tasks would be more than any human being could handle. Fortunately, hardware and software is becoming more and more automated, providing aid for many of these tasks. But, what about those tasks that aren't automated? Or, what about those tasks that are unique to your workflow? On the Mac, there is hope. It's called AppleScript.

This session will provide an introduction to AppleScript, and begin exploring some of the ways that scripting can help to improve your digital workflow. We will look at applications like Photoshop, iPhoto, and Portfolio, and explore ways that these applications can be scripted to perform tasks that will help you to stay organized, efficient, and stress-free.

With the release of Mac OS X Tiger, Apple has introduced another new and exciting automation tool, Automator. In this session, we will also take a look at how Automator workflows can help to reduce repetitive tasks, and help to make your photography workflow more efficient.

Any amateur or professional digital photographers should attend this session. For additional information about this session, please visit the Macworld website or Automated Workflows LLC's website.

Designed for all levels of users, from novice to expert, Automator makes performing time consuming and repetitive tasks a snap!
Automator Book Announced

Mac OS X Technology Guide to Automator Available From SpiderWorks, LLC

Phoenixville, Pennsylvania — May 23rd, 2005 — Automated Workflows, LLC is pleased to announce the availability of the "Mac OS X Technology Guide to Automator", written by Benjamin S. Waldie, president of Automated Workflows, LLC.

At the heart of Mac OS X Tiger, Automator is an application that brings the power of automation to the user level, with no programming required! Within Automator, users work with two main types of components, actions and workflows. Actions are built by developers, and each action’s purpose is to perform a single task, such as opening a file, checking your email, or rotating an image. Workflows are designed and constructed by users, by piecing together actions in a sequence, to create a virtual assembly line of automated tasks. Once constructed, workflows may be saved and triggered by a user in a variety of ways. Workflows may be run from within the Automator application, saved and run as an application, as a Folder Action, as an iCal alarm, as a print workflow, and more.

The "Mac OS X Technology Guide to Automator" provides detailed coverage of Automator from the perspective of both a user and a developer. The first section of the book is geared toward users, and covers all aspects of the Automator application itself. Users are guided through the use of the Automator interface, and are taught how to use the application to construct unique automated workflows, which can help users to become more efficient in their daily routines. The second section of the book is geared toward developers, and explains how to extend the power of Automator by creating custom actions. Developers are walked through the process of creating Automator actions in both AppleScript and Objective-C.

The "Mac OS X Technology Guide to Automator" is available in eBook format for $14.95, and in print form for $29.99 from SpiderWorks, LLC. The print version of the book is also available on Amazon.com.

Benjamin S. Waldie is also the author of "AppleScripting the Finder", an eBook also available from SpiderWorks, LLC. Benjamin writes a regular AppleScript column for MacTECH Magazine and X-Ray Magazine, and is president of Automated Workflows, LLC. Automated Workflows specializes in offering AppleScript and workflow automation consulting services to Macintosh-based businesses.
