Trouble Saving Files

Trouble Saving Files

Postby stu » 07.25.14 10:57 am

Hiya, I tried both 'Save Text Edit Document' and 'Write Text To File'

The first didn't produce any results all thought it reported as operation successful. :?

The latter wouldn't overwrite existing files. So I had to name each file separately in order to use the automator. Not good for setting up a batch work flow.

Has any one else had this kind of problem before?

To help troubleshoot this, please test an example workflow. Download the Text Example Workflows from this message:

viewtopic.php?f=45&t=401

Then open the "Write Text to File" workflow. I was able to successfully run it twice, modifying the text the second time and overwriting the existing file (by checking "Overwrite existing files").

If this doesn't work for you, please let me know your system information and where you purchased the Text Action Pack.

There is also a "Save TextEdit Documents" example workflow. I am seeing a problem with it and am working to isolate the issue.

Stu,

For your Workflow to function, you need to add two actions after the first "Ask for Finder Items" actions:

* Open Finder Items (specify open in TextEdit)
* Get Contents of TextEdit Document

…Then you can proceed with the multiple Find and Replace in Text steps. HOWEVER, I am seeing a problem with the final action: Save TextEdit Documents. Until we are able to get this resolved, I would recommend a different workflow approach:

1. Ask for Finder Items
2. Read Text File (Read as Plain Text)
3-5. Your three Find an Replace in Text steps
6. Write Text to File

I know you said there was an issue with Write Text to File, but that may have been because the existing problem in your workflow. The above workflow is running fine for me under 10.9.4.

Let me know how it goes,

Ray

Two odd things:

The first Find and Replace in Text step removes the word 'youtube' though adds this:
(
"
"
)

to the beginning and end of the text.

Still no luck with the 'Write Text to File' .

The write to text will only work if I enter a name. (Won't Overwrite existing File)

Stu,

I'm not seeing that at all. And I'm using your original file and actions. Could you check the Replace field just in case something got added? Or possibly check the original file to make sure it wasn't edited?

This action requires a file name. It works a little differently since Read never really "opens" a file. Once it is done, based on the file name and folder chosen in the action, it either creates a new file or writes over an existing one. But it must have the name and folder to write over an existing one.

There are way around this. Are you attempting to modify the original files, or use the same file name in a different folder?

Hi Ray,

I would like really to overwrite the original file in the folder... replace the file with the new edits.

I'm having what seems to be the exact same problem. I have a workflow that should go through a folder of plain text files, do the same find-and-replace in each of them, and save them with their original names. Every step works except for the last one. This is the single purpose for which I bought this pack. How can I work through this? Thanks.

Could you please send your workflow to support at automatedworkflows dot com? This bug has been problematic, but I do have a workaround.
