Automator Action Pack Folders From List

Automator Action Pack Folders From List

Postby CliveSmith555 » 06.23.14 4:15 am

Hi there

I have just bought and installed the above and have a question regarding the resultant folder names.

The newly created folders have all be named according as expected, but the filepath has also been included.

Have I missed a setting that removes the file path from the folder creation process? How do I batch create folders without the resultant filepath?

Thanks
Clive

Hi Clive,

Let me be sure I understand what you are asking. Are you saying that you want to create a set of folders, and then pass their names, rather than their paths, to another action? What are you trying to accomplish?

To retrieve the names of items, you can use the Get Finder Item Names action. See the example workflow below.

Hope this helps.

Hi Ben

I have a set of scanned documents that reside in three separate folders. In each of those root folders, there are thousands of folders (they are client names) that have around four to six folders (categories for each client) which have the clients' respective documents in them.

I need to duplicate the client names folders to a new directory (without the sub folders).

I am on Mac, so creating a text list of the clients' names is easy. I could not figure out a way to pass the text file to the automator and create the folder names, so I dragged the client name folders into your action and created the new folders that way. The only issue was that I landed up with the filepath structure as part of the newly created folder names.

I landed up passing the resultant folders to an app to strip out the filepath, so I managed to sort it out, but would like to know if there is a step in your plugin that would have stripped it out at creation without the need of the second step, of failing that, if the action would accept a text file of names?

I hope that I have explained it clearly and thanks for the help?

Hi Clive,

Ah, I see. So, one way to do this is to use a list of names in a text file. To do this, you need to read the text file, split it into paragraphs, and then batch create the folders. See the attached screenshot.

The other way to do this is to retrieve the folders, extract their names, and then batch create the folders. See the other attached screenshot.

Hope this helps.

Hi Ben

Thank you so much!

I managed with the first route you suggested.

I also tried the second way, but was not able to find the action "Read Text File". Is that an action that needs to be purchased?

Hi Clive,

Actually, yes. Read Text File is part of my Text Automator Action Pack, also available in the Mac App Store.
